In July 2015, two white-hat hackers called Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek, based in St. Louis, Mo., demonstrated a previously unknown (“zero-day” in the industry jargon) exploit which could take control of a car: they helpfully demonstrated to a journalist that they could control his air conditioning, the radio, even the accelerator pedal as he drove on the highway.
